At just 22 years old, Aisea Naboko hailing from Burenitu Village in Ra, is realizing a dream that once seemed distant from the mountains of his childhood home. Currently in his third year as a flight attendant, Naboko spends most of his days soaring above the clouds, connecting passengers across the Pacific and beyond, all while carrying the pride of his vanua with him on every journey. However, his path to the skies was not without challenges.

Naboko’s journey is a narrative defined by determination, sacrifice, and the robust support of his family, much like many other Fijians from rural communities. Before entering the aviation industry, he was studying hospitality and tourism at the Fiji National University. This field was a natural fit for his amicable and service-oriented character. Nevertheless, he made the tough decision to pause his studies.

“For now, I’m focused on saving money from my job. Education is still part of my plan, but I want to be financially ready before I return to school,” he shared. His pragmatic approach reflects a maturity uncommon for many his age, recognizing that achieving dreams requires both patience and strategic planning.

Naboko joined the airline sector at the young age of 19, and though initially overwhelmed by long hours, new environments, and the responsibility of representing Fiji, he quickly distinguished himself through his vibrant personality and confidence. “I still remember my first flight. I was nervous but excited. When the plane took off, I felt something change inside of me. I felt like this is where I belong,” he recalled.

His role has allowed him to explore destinations he once only fantasized about, including Australia, New Zealand, parts of the USA, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, among others. Yet for Naboko, the most fulfilling aspect of the job transcends travel; it’s the deep connections he forms with passengers. “Every flight introduces new faces and stories, making me appreciate the vastness of the world and the importance of kindness,” he explained.

Despite his international experiences, Naboko remains rooted in his Fijian identity, proudly representing Burenitu Village and maintaining strong ties to his origins. “Ra will always be my home. It’s where I learned the good values I carry with me. No matter how far I travel, I always remember where I started,” he stated.

As the youngest of five siblings, the unwavering support from his family serves as his anchor. “My parents and siblings have always believed in me. They encouraged me to seize opportunities, even during my moments of doubt. Everything I do now is to make them proud,” he emphasized.

When not in the air, Naboko cherishes spending quiet time with family and friends, often seeking solace on the coast or in the village. His profession has given him a new appreciation for life’s peaceful moments. “People think being a flight attendant is glamorous, but behind the uniform, there’s a lot of hard work. You handle exhausted passengers, time zone changes, and challenging weather. But I love it because every day is different,” he expressed.

His work has deepened his understanding of service and responsibility. “Even small gestures, like helping a passenger or offering a smile, can make a significant difference. It’s about showcasing the Fijian spirit wherever you go,” he said.

Looking ahead, Naboko aspires to continue advancing within the aviation industry while completing his education. He hopes to motivate other young Fijians, particularly those from rural backgrounds, to reach for their dreams. “I want those from villages like mine to know their aspirations are valid. You don’t need to come from the city or have everything laid out. If you work hard, remain respectful, and believe in yourself, you can achieve great things,” he encouraged.

For Aisea Naboko, the sky is not the limit; it marks just the beginning of his journey. Each flight taken not only carries passengers but also the dreams of a young man from Ra who dared to reach beyond the clouds.
