Penioni Fakauliafa, a 74-year-old stalwart of the hospitality industry, has been honored with the “Best Director of Operations” award at the Haute Grandeur Global Awards 2024 for his significant contributions at the Tokoriki Island Resort in the Mamanuca archipelago of Fiji.

Mr. Fakauliafa, originally from Sawana in Vanuabalavu, Lau, embarked on his remarkable journey at the age of 10 when he moved to Suva. His education at Navuso Agricultural School set the groundwork for a career that began in earnest in 1970 at the Suva wharf, before he transitioned to the hospitality sector in 1975 at the Regent of Fiji, Denarau’s first hotel.

Beginning as a porter, Mr. Fakauliafa became the first point of contact for tourists arriving in Fiji, which sparked his passion for hospitality. He emphasizes the vital role of welcoming guests warmly, stating, “We are literally the first group that a tourist interacts with.” His career trajectory, climbing from porter to duty manager, exemplifies his dedication to exceptional service.

Mr. Fakauliafa views tourism as a crucial lifeline for many Fijians and sees his work as a contribution to his family and the broader community. Waking up at 3 am every day reflects his commitment to excellence. He believes that genuine hospitality is a divine gift, driving him to serve guests with warmth and authenticity.

Throughout his years in the industry, he has noted a shift in hospitality dynamics. While the smiles that characterize Fijian culture used to be a hallmark, he worries that this essential aspect is fading. He articulates that visitors come not only for the beautiful beaches but for the rich Fijian culture and the genuine warmth of its people.

Mr. Fakauliafa’s philosophy of service extends beyond hospitality; he fosters a positive work environment at Tokoriki Island Resort, which he has called home since 2006. His leadership style creates a family atmosphere where every member feels valued, as evidenced by the affectionate nickname “Tua,” meaning “grandfather,” given to him by colleagues.

Despite personal hardships, including the loss of his wife during the COVID pandemic, Mr. Fakauliafa maintains a hopeful outlook, inspired by his faith and the support of his children. He remains steadfast in his belief that dedication to both family and work can peacefully coexist.
