Taichi Vakasama, a national swimming champion, has successfully demonstrated that one can excel both in sports and academics, emphasizing that nothing is impossible. He celebrated his graduation with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Fiji on November 29.

At just 24 years old, Vakasama shared with SUNsports the challenges he faced during his six-year academic journey at the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Science in Lautoka, where he balanced rigorous studying with his swimming commitments.

Reflecting on his initial year at university, Vakasama described it as a significant transition, marked by a heavy workload and a completely new environment. He noted that the global pandemic and his participation in the Olympic Games added to his challenges. However, through perseverance and improved time management, he adapted well to his dual commitments. He acknowledged the support of his classmates, who helped him catch up on missed lessons when he was away training.

Vakasama attributed his success to his parents, whose unwavering support and encouragement played a pivotal role in his achievements.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Vakasama has an impressive swimming resume, including competing in events like the 100 meters breaststroke at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou and representing Fiji at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. He also holds the Pacific Games men’s 200m breaststroke record and was the first Fijian swimmer to earn a medal at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games.

With a mother from Japan and a father from Vanuabalavu in Lau, Vakasama’s diverse background enriches his journey as an athlete and a scholar.

This inspiring story serves as a testament to the power of hard work and dedication, illustrating that with the right support and determination, individuals can achieve remarkable feats across various fields.

In summary, Taichi Vakasama’s achievements highlight the possibility of balancing rigorous academic pursuits with athletic excellence, creating a role model for future generations. His journey not only reflects personal success but also encourages others to aim high, regardless of the challenges they may face.
