Niteshwar Prasad, a farmer from Muaniweni in Naitasiri, exemplifies how unexpected life changes can lead to more fulfilling paths. Once a police officer, Mr. Prasad’s life transformed dramatically after a life-altering car accident in 2006 while he was serving in the force.
The accident forced him to reevaluate his life’s direction. Following a significant recovery period, he decided to leave his police career and return home to manage his family’s farming business. Growing up in a farming household with his siblings, Mr. Prasad had never considered agriculture as a full-time profession until this pivotal moment. The tragic passing of his mother in the same year deepened his determination to stay close to his roots.
Despite having faced challenges, particularly during the political upheavals in Fiji, Mr. Prasad remains optimistic about life in Muaniweni. He has built thriving operations on more than 10 acres of land, including approximately 6,000 dalo plants, an acre dedicated to pumpkins, and a chicken shed.
For Mr. Prasad, the fulfillment of farming extends beyond mere financial benefits. He takes pride in the fresh produce he cultivates, which ensures that his family enjoys healthy and wholesome meals free from additives. He appreciates the physical and mental health benefits that outdoor farm work offers, emphasizing that being engaged in agriculture keeps one fit and attuned to nature.
While he acknowledges the importance of education and other career paths, Mr. Prasad encourages landowners to explore the lucrative opportunities in agriculture. He believes that with hard work and dedication, farming can be a rewarding venture.
He also sees potential in the next generation, as one of his children has already expressed interest in farming. Mr. Prasad hopes to mentor them to continue the family legacy.
