Joseph Fatiaki’s dedication to community service is greatly enhanced by his extensive background of over 35 years as a police officer. At 63 years old, he has been the chairman of the Tavua District Council of Social Services since 2020. Mr. Fatiaki shares insights from his time as an officer with local community members.
“Three years ago, I was elected as chairman of the Tavua District Council of Social Services,” he explained. His earlier experience in community policing within the police force made him well-suited for this role. Upon leaving the force, he observed the impactful work of DCOSS in Tavua, which motivated him to contribute his expertise in community engagement.
Mr. Fatiaki emphasized that his role differs from his previous position in the police force, stating, “As a police officer, everything was done through discipline. You follow orders and commands. Here, you have no power over people—it’s voluntary work.” He believes the key is to inspire community members to participate willingly.
He pointed out the importance of attracting and retaining members in the organization. “Many lose faith when they don’t have support, especially from their leaders. You must remember that these individuals work without payment, so it’s vital to actively engage them in community service.”
For young people aspiring to leadership roles, Mr. Fatiaki highlights the significance of patience and commitment. He acknowledges that leadership in volunteer work can be challenging: “You must ensure clear and truthful communication with your members.”
Reflecting on his journey, the former student of Marist Brothers High School expresses gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to his community. He feels energized to continue working for the public until he is ready to pass the torch to the next generation of leaders.
“At some point, I think it’s time for me to hang up my boots and let the younger generation carry on,” he remarked, offering encouragement to those looking to lead.
This story is a testament to the value of experience, compassion, and the impact one individual can have on their community. By sharing his life lessons and encouragement, Mr. Fatiaki not only shapes the present but also inspires the future leaders of Tavua to pursue a path of service and dedication.
