Joseph Fatiaki has dedicated his life to community service, drawing on over 35 years of experience as a police officer. At 63 years old, he has been the chairman of the Tavua District Council of Social Services (DCOSS) since 2020 and actively shares his insights from his law enforcement career with community members.

Mr. Fatiaki shared that his involvement in community service is a continuation of his work in community policing during his time with the police force. After observing the efforts of DCOSS in Tavua, he felt motivated to contribute his knowledge and foster community engagement in meaningful ways.

Reflecting on the differences between police work and community service, Mr. Fatiaki emphasized the importance of voluntary participation. He stated, “In the police force, everything is done through discipline and following orders, but here, we encourage individuals to join because it’s based on voluntary work.” His approach involves motivating community members to engage and collaborate towards common goals.

As a father of five with eight grandchildren, he believes that community involvement is crucial for the success of DCOSS. Mr. Fatiaki noted that it is essential to provide support and encouragement to maintain members’ faith in the organization, particularly when they are working without pay. Engaging volunteers is not just about attracting them but also about fostering their interest in community service.

Providing guidance to youth aspiring to lead in similar roles, Mr. Fatiaki stressed the importance of patience and a deep commitment to service. He acknowledged the complexities of leading volunteers and the need for accurate communication to build trust and reliability within the team.

Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to his community, Mr. Fatiaki remarked on the vitality he still possesses to assist others. He also expressed a thoughtful perspective on succession, considering a future where he could pass on responsibilities to the younger generation. “At some point, it’s time for me to hand over the reins,” he noted, encouraging future leaders to embrace the opportunity to serve their communities.

In summary, Joseph Fatiaki exemplifies the spirit of community service, leveraging his experience to inspire and mobilize others for positive change. His dedication underscores the importance of patience, collaboration, and genuine commitment in volunteer-led initiatives. Mr. Fatiaki’s journey serves as a reminder that anyone can make a meaningful impact in their community, and his call for empowered youth provides hope for the future.
