Shalen Lal’s deep-rooted passion for football has not only shaped his own remarkable journey but also left a lasting impact on the Ba Football Club community. Now a 42-year-old teacher at Arya Kanya Pathshala Primary School in Yalalevu, Ba, Lal reminisces about his journey from a young football enthusiast to a steadfast player for the celebrated Ba FC.

Lal’s football career began at the age of 20, during which he developed a strong connection with his team, representing Ba FC for over a decade. He proudly reflects on his time with the club, emphasizing the loyalty that was paramount among players during his era. “I have only played for Ba FC,” Lal stated, despite receiving lucrative offers from other teams. His commitment to Ba FC culminated in 11 appearances at the Battle of the Giants tournament, where he participated in six finals, winning five titles—a testament to his dedication.

One of Lal’s fondest memories includes his memorable assist to striker Osea Vakatalesau during the 2009 final against Lautoka, which secured a victory for Ba FC. He also fondly recalls scoring a crucial goal in O League games against AS-Pirae, clinching the win in the dying moments of the match.

Lal attributes his success to rigorous training regimens and a disciplined lifestyle. “Fitness training was our priority,” he remarked, noting the sacrifices players made for their passion, often minimizing social activities for the sake of their game.

Transitioning into coaching, Lal earned his B License coaching qualification in 2016 and has since taken charge of various district teams, including Nadi and Lautoka. He has also served as the National Head coach for U17 and U20 teams, contributing to developing young talents.

As the Battle of the Giants tournament approaches, Lal extends his well wishes to all participating teams, encouraging them to demonstrate their unwavering hard work and commitment on the field.

This narrative is reminiscent of the stories shared by other players in Fijian football, such as Lote Delai, whose contributions to Ba FC in the 1991 Fiji FACT tournament marked a significant chapter in the club’s rich history. His sentiment echoes Lal’s, emphasizing the bond between players and their communities, and the shared joy that football fosters.

The enduring commitment and passion of players like Lal and Delai highlight a hopeful future for Fijian football as the sport continues to thrive, uniting communities and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
