From Pest Control to Pet Advocacy: Miriama’s Transformative Journey

Miriama Qio’s life took a positive turn when she joined the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) as a kennel hand. Before dedicating herself to animal welfare, Miriama worked in pest control, a field focused on managing and preventing pests that can harm crops and structures.

Growing up in Kadavu, Miriama was no stranger to animals as her family always had pets. “At home, we always had a pet,” she recalled, noting that her mother instilled in her the responsibilities of caring for the animal. These early experiences prepared Miriama for her current role at SPCA, although she initially aspired to become a lawyer within the justice system.

Her journey to SPCA began when she spotted an advertisement on Facebook, which prompted her to apply. Miriama’s daily routine involves rising early to prepare food for the animals, ensuring that they are fed three times a day. After breakfast, she focuses on cleaning and socializing with the animals, fostering a comforting environment for them.

Despite living in Nakasi, Miriama remains committed to her responsibilities at the shelter and appreciates the life lessons she has learned from the animals. Spending time with them has helped her improve her communication skills and develop empathy. She shared a profound sentiment she received from a woman she met: that while human tears reach Jesus, animal tears go directly to the Creator, underscoring the depth of their suffering.

Caring for vulnerable animals can be emotionally challenging, yet Miriama and her colleagues find purpose in their work, striving to be better individuals through their experiences.

Shaneel Narayan, the SPCA clinic manager, highlighted ongoing efforts with local authorities to enhance policies regarding pet ownership, stressing the importance of keeping pets secure within their yards. He praised the Ministry of Agriculture’s initiatives to review existing regulations and noted the significance of awareness programs in schools.

“Changing mindsets begins at the grassroots level,” Shaneel stated, emphasizing the success of their educational efforts over the past several years. With a focus on fostering kindness to all living beings, the SPCA encourages the community to join them in advocating for animal welfare.
