Semi Seruvakula, a 29-year-old from Navutu Village in Naitasiri, has turned his life around after a difficult period that began 11 years ago when peer pressure led him to abandon his mechanical engineering studies. Instead of giving up, he faced his challenges with resilience, ultimately obtaining his Certificate in Fabrication and Welding (Level 3) at the Fiji National University (FNU) graduation ceremony held at the Vodafone Arena.

Reflecting on his past, Mr. Seruvakula shared how he initially chose to return home and work on the family farm instead of pursuing education. However, a pivotal moment came when a friend offered him a job as a security officer, from which he discovered his interest in further education. Through hard work and dedication, he financed his studies while balancing his job.

His father, Venieli Cakausese, a village headman, expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishments. He emphasized that, despite the hardships, Semi’s experiences have contributed to his growth into a strong and independent individual. Mr. Cakausese urged young people to seize educational opportunities and maintain their faith, stating, “Pursue God well and pursue education. There are so many opportunities available. The onus is on you kids to make it happen.”

After a year and a half of commitment to his studies at FNU’s Samabula campus, Mr. Seruvakula is now working at Fast Engineering, where he feels passionate about his career. He credits his faith for guiding his next steps, stating, “I’m leaning on God to direct my next steps.”

This inspiring story highlights the importance of perseverance and faith in overcoming life’s obstacles. Mr. Seruvakula serves as an example for many young people who may feel discouraged by peer pressure or setbacks. His journey exemplifies how determination and a willingness to change direction can lead to a fulfilling and successful future.

In summary, Semi Seruvakula’s story is a powerful reminder that even when circumstances seem dire, resilience and faith can guide individuals towards a brighter path.
