Mere Yabakivou, who hails from Nairukuruku Village, has successfully transformed her passion for beekeeping into a flourishing business known as Yabakivou Liquid Gold. After spending time working in public health and aviation security, Mere embraced the opportunity to dedicate herself fully to bee farming during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “During the COVID-19 pandemic, I came back home on leave and decided to take up bee farming full-time.” Starting her beekeeping venture in 2012, she faced challenges such as equipment shortages but managed to improvise and received vital support from the Agriculture office in Tavua.
Mere highlighted the ease of maintaining bee colonies, stating, “With bees, we don’t have to worry about feeding them or providing water. I could check on them regularly to ensure their health.” What began as a family hobby has grown into a business, with increasing demand for her honey. She now sells 500ml bottles for $13 and 1kg jars for $20, enabling her family to reduce their sugar intake while enjoying the natural sweetness of honey.
In 2023, Mere registered her business and ventured into beeswax products, further expanding her offerings. Supported by the Fiji Beekeepers Association and the Agriculture Ministry, her commitment and ingenuity have turned her passion into a successful enterprise—a testament to her ability to inspire others to pursue their dreams.
In her encouraging words, Mere advises, “Don’t look back or let challenges discourage you; trust in God to help you achieve your goals.” Her story serves as a motivational example of how one can turn adversity into opportunity, creating not only a sustainable business but also a source of inspiration for the community.
This uplifting narrative underscores the power of determination and creativity in achieving business success, particularly in times of uncertainty. It encourages others to explore their passions and highlights the potential for agricultural entrepreneurship in the region.
