From Passion to Podium: Jioweli Vakamoce’s Inspiring Coaching Journey

JIOWELI Vakamoce’s coaching career is a remarkable narrative of dedication, development, and opportunity. He embarked on his coaching journey in 2008 by leading the Suva 2 women’s netball team in the Netball Super League. Although that team fell short to Suva 1 in the finals, it was the beginning of his involvement in the sport. Initially, Vakamoce didn’t view coaching as a long-term career and occasionally helped his alumni netball club.

His true coaching path took shape in 2021 when he volunteered to assist Netball Fiji in preparing the Fiji Pearls for the World Cup qualifiers and the World Championship in 2023. This experience ignited his passion for coaching, prompting him to pursue further development. With the support of Netball Fiji, he was able to complete two levels of Coaching Accreditation through Netball Australia.

In 2023, despite maintaining a full-time position as a senior administrative officer in the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Vakamoce accepted a part-time coaching role at the University of the South Pacific. His commitment to both his career and coaching only deepened.

A significant highlight of thanks to his coaching came when he led the Crest Fiji Men’s netball team to victory at the Men’s Nations Series in Singapore, where they won the Merlion Netball Cup by edging out the Australian under-20 team 55-54. This memorable victory was a proud moment for both Vakamoce and the team, marking Fiji’s first international outing since 2004.

Vakamoce’s recent accomplishments have led him to serve as the interim head coach for the Fiji Pearls, as they gear up for the PacAusSports Series in Brisbane next month. He recognizes the exciting and demanding nature of this role, particularly with only five to six weeks to prepare the team. His immediate priorities are focused on enhancing fitness levels and fostering team combinations.

He acknowledges the difficulties of balancing responsibilities across both teams but feels equipped with strong support and flexible strategies. Central to his coaching philosophy is the importance of communication, as he believes it’s essential for effective coaching and team cohesion.

From volunteer coach to leading a successful men’s team and taking on a crucial role with the Fiji Pearls, Vakamoce’s journey is a testament to his passion and commitment to netball, which promises a bright future ahead.

This story embodies the spirit of perseverance and growth, showcasing how passion can lead to significant achievements and new opportunities. As Vakamoce navigates these challenges, his approach could inspire many aspiring coaches.
