Ifereimi Waqacama Vesikula, a 50-year-old father from Namara, Tailevu, expressed great pride as he celebrated the academic achievements of his daughter, Mere Drewai Vesikula. During the Fiji National University (FNU) graduation ceremony held at Vodafone Arena in Suva, the 21-year-old Mere was recognized for her hard work, earning both Level 4 and Level 5 certificates in Sports Science. Notably, she was one of only three students to receive the Level 5 certificate and the sole recipient of the Level 4 qualification.

Mr. Vesikula shared that when they first noticed Mere’s enthusiasm for sports, they decided to fully support her journey. Her passion was evident from a young age when she became the only girl in the Tailevu South Under-9 boys’ rugby team during the Milo Kaji games in primary school. Although there were concerns that she might change her focus after graduating from Adi Cakobau School, Mere remained dedicated to pursuing her interests in sports science.

In her remarks, Mere acknowledged the significance of her family’s support, particularly highlighting her mother, who works as a nurse in Australia. She faced challenges, including daily commutes from Tailevu to Nasinu Campus and various financial difficulties, but remained focused on her goals. Currently, she is completing an attachment with a gym in Nasinu and aspires to become a teacher in Physical Education, Music, and Arts and Craft.

Mr. Vesikula emphasized the crucial role parents play in guiding and nurturing their children’s dreams. He reminded others that despite life’s challenges, prioritizing their children’s aspirations should always be a top concern.

This inspiring story serves as a reminder of the importance of family support in pursuing one’s passions. Mere’s journey highlights how determination and support can lead to significant achievements, encouraging other students facing similar challenges to persist in their ambitions. Furthermore, it sheds light on the need for parents to remain engaged in nurturing their children’s dreams, no matter the obstacles they encounter.
