In the small village of Nabavatu, located by the Dreketi River, families have faced significant challenges since Tropical Cyclone Ana struck in January 2021. At that time, there were roughly 38 families residing in the village, which has since been left largely devastated, forcing residents into temporary living conditions in tents.
Since the cyclone’s impact, life for the villagers has become increasingly difficult. They have weathered a range of harsh conditions, from cold nights to scorching days, in inadequate temporary shelters that have begun to deteriorate. This situation has raised health concerns, especially for the elderly and vulnerable populations within the community, exposing them to germs and pests.
Despite their precarious circumstances, the spirit of the villagers has not been broken. They have held onto hope for government-supported relocation plans to a new site identified for permanent housing. As they approach the fifth anniversary of their displacement, the villagers continue to navigate these challenges with resilience, maintaining their livelihoods and community bonds.
Elderly residents like 76-year-old Lavenia Voutua have shared the struggles of living in confined spaces, particularly during sickness. Other villagers, like Ana Vosalevu, have highlighted the importance of faith and community support in getting through tough times. Despite living in tents, families have worked together to ensure that children continue their education and that everyone contributes to the household needs. The villagers have managed to create a semblance of normalcy, engaging in farming and market selling, and maintaining communal living despite the trials.
Encouragingly, recent actions from the government provide a glimmer of hope. Plans for the construction of 37 new homes for the affected families have been announced, with a tender process already in motion to facilitate this development. Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Ditoka has expressed the commitment to following through with these plans to ensure timely completion.
