Gus Minibi’s inspiring journey from the highlands of Papua New Guinea to the shores of Fiji reached a significant milestone with his recent graduation from the University of the South Pacific (USP), where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, majoring in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness. His story is a testament to resilience, as he faced numerous challenges from academic pressures to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr. Minibi, who has maternal roots in Nakaunakoro Village, Kadavu, was supported by his father, Yu Minibi, who traveled from PNG to celebrate this momentous occasion with him. Yu expressed his unwavering belief in his son, stating, “I always knew he would finish it because no matter what life threw at him, he never stopped believing in himself.”
Throughout his academic journey, which began in 2018, Mr. Gus encountered significant barriers, particularly financial ones. However, he found critical support at the USP Disability Resource Centre, a place he credits with empowering him to navigate through difficulties. “When fees became a barrier, and pressure from family grew, I still held on,” he said. He characterized the Centre as crucial in helping him “stand back up.”
In a motivational message aimed at fellow students facing hardships, Mr. Gus emphasized, “No matter how long it takes, you have to finish what you started. It’s your journey, no one else. Stay at the crease, persevere.”
His journey mirrors others like Lafaele Tominiko and Francis Adam Archibald, whose stories also reflect overcoming adversity with the help of community and family. Tominiko’s path to graduation was marked by the tragic loss of both parents, while Archibald turned setbacks into comebacks, illustrating the power of resilience. These narratives collectively reinforce the importance of support systems and perseverance in achieving academic success.
Mr. Minibi’s graduation not only symbolizes personal achievement but also stands as a beacon of hope for others in similar situations. His story serves to inspire those who confront difficulties, highlighting that with determination and the right support, dreams can indeed be fulfilled.
