Taichi Vakasama, a national swimming champion, has demonstrated that achieving high levels in sports and academics is possible. He recently graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Fiji on November 29, showcasing his ability to balance rigorous academic demands with his commitment to swimming.
At just 24 years old, Vakasama reflected on his challenging six-year journey at the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Science in Lautoka. He described his first year in university as a significant adjustment, due in part to a new environment and the demanding structure of the medical program. Notably, his preparation for the Olympic Games and navigating the COVID-19 pandemic added to his challenges.
Despite these obstacles, Vakasama adapted over the years, finding effective ways to manage his time between sports and his studies. He credited his supportive colleagues who helped him stay on track during periods when he was focused on training. They provided course updates and assisted him with online lessons, enhancing his learning experience.
Vakasama dedicated this achievement to his parents, acknowledging that their constant support, dedication, and encouragement were vital to his success.
His impressive athletic accomplishments include competing in the men’s 100 meters breaststroke at the 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, China, representing Fiji at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and currently holding the Pacific Games men’s 200m breaststroke record. Additionally, he reached the semi-finals at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and became the first Fijian swimmer to win a medal at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games.
With his mother from Japan and his father from Daliconi, Vanuabalavu in Lau, Vakasama’s multicultural background may also reflect the diverse influences that shaped his journey.
This inspiring story serves as a reminder that determination and support can lead to success in multiple arenas, encouraging young athletes everywhere to pursue their dreams academically and athletically.
