Yolanda Krystel Goundar, 35, has recently been awarded a Trophy of Excellence for her Post-Graduate Diploma in Midwifery, exemplifying the adage, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Goundar is among 35 students who achieved this significant honor.

Balancing her education with the responsibilities of motherhood has been a challenging endeavor for Ms. Goundar. However, she attributes much of her success to the steadfast support of her family. Their encouragement and love have helped her navigate the daily challenges she faced throughout her academic journey.

“I can’t express how grateful I am for the strong family support I’ve had throughout this journey, especially my close circle of friends who have morally supported me during some of my toughest moments,” she expressed. Goundar extends her gratitude specifically to her mother and siblings, who provided crucial assistance with her children during her exam periods and study sessions.

With a long-standing passion for caring for newborns, Ms. Goundar shared that working alongside skilled nurses and doctors has enriched her understanding of midwifery. “I learned the importance of caring not just for the babies, but also for the mothers. That’s what kept me motivated to continue my studies,” she stated.

Currently, Goundar serves as a registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Her journey reflects her optimism and faith, as she encourages others to “Trust God and never lose faith in him.”
