Ema Maria Dilikuca Ganivatu, a recent graduate from the University of the South Pacific (USP), has turned her childhood aspirations of becoming a nurse into a passionate pursuit of journalism, inspired by her grandfather and the experiences of her community. At just 23 years old, Ganivatu hails from Kanakana, Tunuloa in Cakaudrove and has also earned a degree in social work, motivated by the challenges faced by those around her.
Growing up in a family of ten with limited financial resources, Ganivatu’s upbringing was marked by resilience and appreciation for the support of her parents. She recalls the struggles of living with one income to support a large family, emphasizing that her parents instilled valuable lessons of gratitude and humility that continue to shape her outlook on life.
Her interest in journalism developed while watching Al Jazeera News with her grandfather, where she admired the journalists’ abilities to connect with global audiences. This experience also helped her learn English, as her household primarily spoke iTaukei. Motivated by her desire to advocate for marginalized voices, Ganivatu recognizes the impact journalism can have in addressing issues like poverty, mental health, and systemic injustices.
Reflecting on her graduation, she expressed profound joy and gratitude for her family’s support, especially her grandmother, who encouraged her in her studies. As the first journalist in her family, Ganivatu views her achievement as a collective victory for her loved ones’ sacrifices and aspirations.
As she embarks on her career, Ganivatu aims to be a storyteller who leads with empathy and integrity. Her advice for aspiring professionals is to pursue their passions relentlessly, embrace their roots, and remain grounded, as their journeys can inspire others. “You are capable. You are worthy. And your dreams are valid,” she asserts, highlighting the importance of believing in oneself amid challenges.
