JD Sivivatu Kanth’s journey in rugby has taken an exciting turn this year as he has been named to the Fijian Drua development squad. Hailing from Macuata, Vanua Levu, Kanth has maternal connections to Nauru and first made his way to the Drua’s training grounds in 2022, accompanying the Nauru sevens team where he not only observed but also engaged with the milieu by capturing a moment with then-captain Meli Derenalagi.

Now back in Fiji as a development player for the Drua, Kanth reflects on his experience, noting, “Training has been tough, but I’ve been loving it and will keep working hard.” His commitment is evident in the way he embraces the rigorous training sessions, eager to hone his skills at one of the leading professional rugby clubs in the Pacific Islands.

The former student of Ratu Navula College has quickly acclimated to the demands of the sport, attributing much of his development to the guidance of senior players. “I’ve learned how to take care of myself and my body as a professional rugby player, and I’ve picked up new skills,” he shares, indicating his drive to turn his passion for rugby into a sustainable career.

Kanth’s journey is quite remarkable; he started with Australian Rules Football before making the transition to rugby, relocating to Fiji in 2023 to further his education and sports career. His adaptability and talent were apparent as he participated in multiple teams throughout the year, including Ratu Navula College Under-18, Nadi Rugby Union U20, and the Nauru national team, showcasing his diverse skills.

His hard work and dedication have opened doors for him beyond Fiji. He secured opportunities with the Sunnybank Dragons Senior Rugby in Australia and was included in the Queensland Reds extended squad, culminating in a professional contract with VPC Andorra Rugby XV in Spain.

Kanth’s story is not just one of personal achievement but an inspiring testament to the potential within young athletes when they are met with determination, training, and support.
