Yolanda Krystel Goundar, 35, has exemplified the proverb “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” as she received a Trophy of Excellence for her Post-Graduate Diploma in Midwifery. Ms. Goundar was one of 35 students recognized for this significant achievement, which highlights her dedication and resilience.
Balancing her academic commitments with the responsibilities of motherhood has posed challenges for Ms. Goundar, yet she attributes much of her success to the unwavering support of her family. Their encouragement played a crucial role in helping her navigate the demands of her studies.
“I can’t express how grateful I am for the strong family support I’ve had throughout this journey,” she stated. “Especially my close circle of friends who have morally supported me during some of my toughest moments.” She acknowledged the pivotal role her mother and siblings played, helping with childcare during exam periods and study sessions.
Driven by her passion for newborns, Ms. Goundar has also benefited from her experiences working alongside skilled nurses and doctors, which have enriched her knowledge of midwifery. She emphasized the importance of caring not just for the babies but also for their mothers, which has been a significant motivation in her educational journey. Currently, she works as a registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
