Yolanda Krystel Goundar, 35, recently received a Trophy of Excellence for her Post-Graduate Diploma in Midwifery, embodying the adage “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Among a group of 35 awardees, Ms. Goundar has demonstrated resilience in balancing her educational pursuits and the responsibilities of motherhood.
The journey has had its difficulties, but the unwavering support of her family has been instrumental in her success. Ms. Goundar expressed deep gratitude for their love and encouragement, particularly highlighting the crucial role her mother and siblings played in caring for her children during her exam and study periods.
Driven by her passion for working with newborns, she has gained valuable insights through her experiences alongside skilled nurses and doctors, amplifying her commitment to midwifery. “I learned the importance of caring not just for the babies, but also for the mothers,” she noted, identifying this understanding as a driving force in her studies.
Currently, Ms. Goundar serves as a registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where she continues to make a significant impact on the lives of mothers and their newborns.
