Yolanda Krystel Goundar, a 35-year-old registered nurse, recently received a Trophy of Excellence for her Post-Graduate Diploma in Midwifery, embodying the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” She was one of 35 students to achieve this notable recognition.
Managing her academic responsibilities while being a mother has been a significant challenge for Ms. Goundar, yet she credits her family for their unwavering support throughout her journey. Their encouragement has played a vital role in helping her navigate the difficulties that have come her way.
“I can’t express how grateful I am for the strong family support I’ve had throughout this journey, especially my close circle of friends who have morally supported me during some of my toughest moments,” Ms. Goundar emphasized. She expressed her profound appreciation to her mother and siblings, who stepped in to assist with her children during her exam preparations and study sessions.
Her passion for newborns, coupled with her experiences working alongside skilled nurses and doctors, has only strengthened her commitment to midwifery. “I learned the importance of caring not just for the babies, but also for the mothers. That’s what kept me motivated to continue my studies,” Ms. Goundar shared. Currently, she works in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where she continues to make a positive impact.
