From Motherhood to Metal: One Woman’s Journey into Engineering

Joana Adimila, a dedicated stay-at-home mother, has successfully pursued her dream of education despite her circumstances. After an absence of over a decade from formal schooling, she participated in a 12-week training program offered by the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC), where she fully engaged with her learning.

While operating her jewellery business provided her with income, Ms. Adimila sought additional opportunities for growth. “Experiencing what it’s like to be a student again after years at home was refreshing,” she commented. “I’m grateful for the opportunities APTC provided, which allowed me to explore potential areas.”

On Wednesday, she proudly graduated with a Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, with a focus on welding and fabrication. Although she acknowledged the challenges of entering a male-dominated industry, she emphasized the need for more women to engage in engineering fields.

“Transitioning from my small business to exploring other career paths is not an easy task,” she admitted. “However, I am ready with my newly acquired knowledge because I want to have a better future.”
