At the age of 42, Vani Sokomuri has made history in her family by becoming the first to attain a tertiary education qualification. She graduated alongside 27 peers from the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education, receiving a National Certificate in Aged Care and Community Care Level Three.
During a graduation ceremony held at the Civic Centre in Labasa, the expectant mother of her seventh child recounted her remarkable journey filled with hard work and resilience over the past six months. She shared, “After putting all my children to sleep, I would study until 1 AM. Sometimes I’d sleep with them and wake up at 2 AM to study before preparing breakfast and sending them off to school.” Her weekdays were characterized by a hectic pace, with her mornings involving preparing her children for school while ensuring she made it to class by 8 AM.
Hailing from Baravi Village in Navakasiga, Bua, and being the eldest of six siblings, Vani’s dedication was recognized when she received the award for the Best Clinical Student Female. Although she completed her secondary education at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College and initially started a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of the South Pacific, financial limitations led her to pause her academic pursuits after getting married to Napolioni Latianara, an officer with the Labasa Corrections Service, to focus on family responsibilities.
“I always wanted to study,” Vani expressed, adding, “Like others, I dreamed of achieving tertiary education and setting a positive example for my children to show them that dreams should never be abandoned.” Her journey serves as a testament to the power of determination and perseverance, demonstrating that it’s never too late to pursue one’s aspirations.
This inspiring story not only highlights Vani’s achievements but also serves as an encouraging reminder to others that with hard work and support, educational goals can be attainable, regardless of life’s challenges.
In summary, Vani Sokomuri has not only fulfilled her dream of higher education but has also emerged as a role model for her family and community, showcasing the importance of resilience and commitment to personal growth.
