From Missionary to Artisan: Vera’s Heartfelt Creations in Fiji

Spread the love

Vera Sapozhnikova, a talented artisan, has become a familiar face at Suva’s ROC Markets, including the MSME Festive Market that concludes today at the Civic Centre Car Park. Originally from Russia, Vera has lived in Fiji since 2006, initially arriving as a Christian missionary and serving as a Bible teacher for many years before retiring.

Vera has turned her passion for art into a small business, selling her beautiful hand-painted bottles and plates, which she began offering for sale five years ago. These objects, which serve as home decor, require intricate work, with each piece undergoing eight stages of meticulous acrylic hand-painting. What started as a hobby has blossomed into a labor of love for her unique creations.

Interestingly, Vera emphasizes that her designs are not influenced by her Russian roots. She states, “It’s not Russian and is not in Russian style. It’s my own style.” Each piece reflects her personal creativity and emotion, showcasing her talent in repurposing discarded materials into cherished items that range from $25 to $75.

Having lost her husband some time ago and with her two sons residing in Russia, Vera finds solace in her peaceful life in Nausori. Her story is a testament to the power of creativity and resilience, demonstrating how one can craft a fulfilling life in a new environment while embracing one’s passions.

This article highlights how Vera’s unique artistic journey not only enriches her life but also adds a vibrant element to the local market, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for handmade crafts. Vera’s dedication and self-taught skills serve as an inspiration for others to pursue their passions, no matter where life takes them.
