Vera Sapozhnikova, a Russian expatriate, has become a familiar face at Suva’s ROC Markets, where she showcases her vibrant, hand-painted creations. The MSME Festive Market taking place at the Civic Centre Car Park marks her continued passion for artistry and community involvement, with the event concluding today.
Since moving to Fiji in 2006 as a Christian missionary and serving as a Bible teacher for numerous years, Vera has transitioned into a new chapter of her life. Now retired, she has channeled her energy into a creative hobby that has blossomed into a thriving small business over the past five years.
Vera’s eye-catching hand-painted bottles and plates are the hallmark of her artistry. Each item undergoes an extensive eight-step process of careful hand-painting using acrylics, showcasing her dedication to her craft. Interestingly, she has no formal training, having honed her skills through self-teaching alone.
Her unique designs, which she describes as her own style, are not influenced by Russian culture but rather stem from her personal creativity. “The design is from my own heart,” she shares, highlighting her deep emotional connection to her work.
Her beautifully crafted pieces are economically priced between $25 and $75, making them accessible to a wide range of customers. Vera, who experienced the loss of her husband many years ago, now enjoys a peaceful life in Nausori while keeping in touch with her two sons living in Russia.
