Peniana Matai, a dedicated market vendor, is seizing each day’s opportunities amidst fierce competition at the Suva Municipal Market. Three years ago, she bravely transitioned from a casual worker to a bustling vendor, becoming the sole provider for her husband and four children. “Being a market vendor has opened many opportunities, and I’ve met amazing people while doing business,” she shared, highlighting the connections formed through her entrepreneurial journey.

On a successful day, Ms. Matai can earn as much as $300, a significant boost compared to her previous earnings over a fortnight. However, her journey is not without challenges, particularly with fluctuating seafood prices driven by high demand and the labor-intensive process of sourcing products like sea grapes and crabs. Currently, sea grapes are sold between $2 and $5, while crabs in coconut milk are available for $5 at the market.

Similarly, Tokasa Wati, a seasoned vendor with over ten years of experience, is thriving with her dalo farming business. Originating from Lomai Vuna in Naitasiri’s highlands, she shifted to farming after finishing school and has expanded her operations from watermelons to a diverse range of crops including dalo, corn, pumpkins, and green vegetables. During peak season, her earnings can reach up to $3,000 a week, enabling her to support her four children’s education and manage family expenses.

Ms. Wati passionately encourages youth to utilize their land for financial gain, stating, “Every iTaukei person owns land, so there’s no excuse not to make money. If academics aren’t your strength, look at what’s around you.” With dalo bundles selling for $20 to $30, her story embodies resilience, resourcefulness, and the potential for growth through agriculture.

The narratives of Matai and Wati exemplify how individuals can overcome challenges through entrepreneurship and hard work, fostering hope and inspiration for those seeking to improve their economic situations. These market success stories highlight the importance of community, resilience, and the opportunities present in local markets.

In summary, Peniana Matai and Tokasa Wati’s experiences reflect the strength and determination of vendors in Suva’s market, proving that with hard work, resourcefulness, and community support, one can create a successful and fulfilling career.
