Peniana Matai has embraced the life of a market vendor at the Suva Municipal Market, finding success and independence after transitioning from her role as a casual worker three years ago. As the primary provider for her husband and four children, Matai has worked hard to adapt to the challenges of her new role.
“Being a market vendor has opened many opportunities, and I’ve met amazing people while doing business,” she shared. Her dedication is paying off; on a good day, she can earn up to $300, an impressive sum compared to her previous bi-weekly salary.
However, this journey is not without its hurdles. The fluctuating prices of seafood due to high demand and sourcing difficulties for items like sea grapes and crabs present ongoing challenges. Despite the variability, the market offerings remain affordable, with sea grapes priced between $2 and $5 depending on size and crabs prepared in coconut milk available at $5.
Another success story at the market is Tokasa Wati, a seasoned dalo seller with over a decade of farming experience. Originating from Lomai Vuna in Naitasiri’s highlands, she began her farming journey by growing watermelons, eventually branching into dalo farming, which now earns her up to $3,000 per week during peak seasons.
Wati’s four-acre farm, located a four-hour truck ride from her village, also cultivates corn, pumpkins, and various green vegetables. “Farming has been a blessing,” she expressed, highlighting how her income allows her to send all four of her children to school while supporting her family financially.
She encourages the youth of her community to leverage the land they own to secure a brighter future, stating, “Every iTaukei person owns land, so there’s no excuse not to make money. If academics aren’t your strength, look at what’s around you.”
Wati’s dalo bundles, priced between $20 and $30, reflect her resilience and ingenuity, serving as a motivating example for others in her community.
