Ponipate Loganimasi, who chose to pursue rugby instead of attending university, has rapidly made a significant impact on the international rugby scene, thanks to the unwavering support of his father, Joeli Kalougata. In a remarkable journey spanning less than two years, Loganimasi has achieved notable milestones, including winning a silver medal with the Fijian men’s rugby sevens team at the recent Olympics and earning a spot on the World Rugby Men’s Sevens Dream Team of the Year.
His breakout year continued during the World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup in September, where Loganimasi made his debut with the Flying Fijians against Japan, contributing two tries in a dominant 41-17 victory that allowed Fiji to retain the cup. He has also signed on with the Fijian Drua, further cementing his position in professional rugby.
Originally hailing from the village of Lovoni in Ono-i-Lau, and raised in Koroalau, Cakaudrove, the 26-year-old athlete decided to carve his own path despite family encouragement to follow his siblings to Brigham Young University in Utah. Kalougata offered his son guidance, emphasizing reliance on God and the importance of humility and hard work in achieving success.
Loganimasi’s passion for sports extends beyond rugby; he was also a gold medallist in the 200m at the Coca-Cola Games during his time at Navatu Secondary School, where he demonstrated his diverse athletic talent by playing rugby and indoor basketball.
The Dream Team also included prominent players such as Selvyn Davids from South Africa, Antoine Dupont from France, and others, showcasing the elite level at which Loganimasi is competing.
This incredible journey serves as an inspiring testament to following one’s dreams and pursuing passion, demonstrating that with hard work, faith, and perseverance, remarkable achievements are possible. It highlights the importance of supporting young athletes in making choices that resonate with their aspirations, providing hope for future generations in sports.
