Mesake Vocevoce’s journey from Nadi’s local rugby scene to the international stage is a testament to the Nadi Rugby Union’s commitment to developing homegrown talent. The former Nadi U19 player is now part of the Fijian Drua and has represented the Flying Fijians, recently playing for the First Nations & Pasifika XV against the British & Irish Lions in Australia.
The Nadi Rugby Union’s Vice President of Operations, Jeff Tamata, expressed pride in Vocevoce’s accomplishments, stating that his development story reinforces the organization’s dedication to nurturing local talent. Vocevoce made a name for himself by winning the cup with the U19 team and then progressing through club rugby, a path cultivated through the union’s development programs. Tamata articulated their philosophy, emphasizing, “We focus on our club talent and believe in growing our own.”
Vocevoce is one of several notable players to emerge from Nadi’s system, which has also highlighted the careers of Flying Fijians representatives like Vilimoni Botitu and Setareki Tuicuvu, along with Olympic gold medallist Masivesi Dakuwaqa.
As Nadi begins its 2025 Skipper Cup season, commencing with a close 17-15 win over Lautoka, they look forward to their next match against Macuata. This focus on local talent development continues to inspire young athletes across Fiji, embodying the idea that dedication and grassroots support can pave the way for significant achievements.
This narrative not only celebrates Vocevoce’s individual success but also reflects the broader impact of supportive community structures in fostering athletic talent, signaling a bright future for rugby in the region.
