Ponipate Loganimasi’s decision to pursue a career in rugby instead of following a traditional university path has proven to be a significant turning point in his life. Encouraged by his father, Joeli Kalougata, Loganimasi has quickly made a name for himself on the international rugby scene in less than two years with the national sevens team.
This year, Loganimasi not only helped secure an Olympic silver medal for Fiji’s men’s rugby sevens team but also became the only Fijian player to be named in the World Rugby Men’s Sevens Dream Team of the Year, a prestigious recognition announced recently.
His ascent in the sport continued as he participated in the World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup in September, making his debut with the Flying Fijians. In the final against Japan, under coach Eddie Jones, Loganimasi scored two tries during a compelling 41-17 victory that secured Fiji’s title retention.
In October, he took another step in his career by signing with the Fijian Drua. Born and raised in Koroalau, Cakaudrove, but originally from Lovoni in Ono-i-Lau, the 26-year-old has shown remarkable talent and determination.
Loganimasi’s family, particularly his father, had suggested he continue his education at Brigham Young University in Utah; however, he chose to follow his passion for rugby. Kalougata expressed great pride in his son’s accomplishments, emphasizing the importance of faith and hard work. “If you seek God’s guidance,” he stated, “you should take the first step – train hard, be humble, and be a good listener.”
Kalougata also shared that Loganimasi is a Coca-Cola Games gold medallist, having won the 200m in his junior year at Navatu Secondary School, showcasing his versatility as an athlete who has also engaged in rugby and indoor basketball during high school.
Loganimasi’s peers on the dream team include top players from around the world such as Selvyn Davids from South Africa and Antoine Dupont from France, among others.
This narrative of Loganimasi serves as an inspiring testament to what can happen when one follows their passion and dedicates themselves to their dreams, resonating with aspiring athletes everywhere.
In summary, Ponipate Loganimasi’s remarkable achievements in rugby reflect his determination and the strong support from his family, positioning him as a beacon of hope for young athletes considering unconventional paths in pursuit of their passions.
