Nilesh Karan, a senior loan officer at the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF), is embarking on a new journey in his career as he transitions into the legal profession. At 47 years old, Karan recently completed his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Fiji, marking a significant milestone in his professional development.
Karan’s decision to pursue a career in law stems from his previous experiences working in the legal sector, particularly in civil and litigation matters. With a robust background that includes positions in various law firms across Ba, Lautoka, and Nadi, as well as the Housing Authority, Karan has now dedicated 19 years to SCGF, where he previously held the role of senior credit officer at Carpenter Finance in Lautoka.
Karan faced significant challenges during his seven-year journey to complete his law degree while juggling work and family responsibilities. He emphasized the importance of effective time management to maintain balance in his life. By developing a flexible schedule that allocated specific times for lectures, study sessions, and work commitments, Karan was able to navigate the demanding periods of exams and submissions with better organization and focus.
He credits his success to the unwavering support of his family, particularly his wife, who encouraged him throughout his studies, acknowledging the sacrifices they made together. Karan’s determination was further bolstered by the SCGF’s commitment to fostering employee growth and development, allowing him the flexibility to pursue his educational aspirations.
Looking ahead, Karan plans to enroll in a postgraduate program and aims to be admitted to the bar, fully transitioning into his new legal career.
