Kaveni Roseru, a front row player for the Silktails, recently explored the world of sevens rugby by participating in the Under-19 Senikau club at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament. Transitioning from rugby league, where he played as a flanker for Naitasiri Secondary School during the Deans rugby competition, Roseru is gradually adapting to this different format of the sport.
Despite being more familiar with rugby league, where he represented his school’s U19 team, Roseru faced tough competition, suffering losses to Ratu Kadavulevu School in both rugby league and rugby union playoffs last year. His potential was recognized by Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata, who approached him after the U19 final. Since then, he has made strides by representing the Junior Fiji Bati team and has been selected as a rookie for the Kaiviti Silktails, entering his second year in the Jersey Flegg competition.
At just 19 years old, Roseru hails from Nukuloa village in Naitasiri and cherishes his athletic talent, expressing gratitude for the support of his parents, who continually encourage him to be patient and determined. He advises young athletes to listen to their parents, noting that perseverance can lead to valuable opportunities.
Roseru embraces the challenges of training, often walking or running from his village to school. He remains committed to improving and has set his sights on securing a contract in the National Rugby League (NRL). His experiences in the fast-paced Jersey Flegg competition have taught him adaptability and discipline—qualities he strives to embody both on and off the field.
Inspired by Fiji Bati player Viliame Kikau, Roseru hopes to represent the national team in the future, recalling the pride he felt watching them play at home just two months ago. His journey reflects resilience and ambition, serving as an example for aspiring athletes everywhere.
This story highlights the power of perseverance and determination in sports. Roseru’s journey inspires others, showing that with hard work, dreams can be realized even in the face of challenges.
