Ravikash Chand, a recent gold medallist from the University of Fiji School of Business and Economics, expressed profound gratitude for his elderly parents, who witnessed his graduation on Friday. At 33, Chand has made significant strides as a teacher at Pandit Vishnu Deo Memorial College and celebrated earning a Master of Commerce in Accounting at the university’s Saweni campus in Lautoka.
Recognized for his excellence as a student, Chand received the gold medal, which acknowledges his standout performance in the School of Business and Economics. His parents traveled from Labasa to share this milestone with him, and he reflected on the sacrifices they made for his education.
“I am thankful that they came to witness their labour was not in vain,” Mr. Chand shared. He emphasized that his family does not come from wealth, with his father working as a laborer who previously cut sugarcane to fund his education. This rewarding journey has left a profound impact on him, stating, “Their struggles continue to inspire me to excel in both my career and my education.”
As the eldest sibling, Chand hopes to set a positive example, illustrating that, regardless of their backgrounds, anyone can break barriers and achieve their goals. Starting his teaching career in 2012 at All Saints Secondary School in Labasa, he skillfully balanced family responsibilities, work, and studies, attributing his academic success to hard work alongside strong time management skills.
His recent qualification has opened doors for teaching opportunities at the tertiary level, signaling a bright future ahead. In his heartfelt gratitude, he acknowledged the support from his family and lecturers, reinforcing the idea that determination combined with community support can lead to extraordinary achievements.
