Amele Biu Besetimoala has transformed the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying ‘No Jab, No Job’ policy into a journey of personal growth and achievement. The 39-year-old former teacher from Sabeto, Nadi, celebrated her graduation with a Bachelor of Teaching in Primary Inservice during the 2024 University of Fiji ceremony held at Saweni Campus in Lautoka.
After losing her teaching position for declining vaccination amidst the pandemic, she viewed this setback as an opening to pursue higher education. “I couldn’t continue teaching during the pandemic because I chose not to be vaccinated,” she explained. Reflecting on her experience, she expressed gratitude for the unforeseen opportunity the situation provided. “I believe everything happens for a reason. Losing my job gave me the chance to focus on higher education. I’m hopeful to return to teaching next year and continue advancing my studies,” she said.
Balancing family life, her studies, and personal commitments as a married mother of four from Moala Island, Lau, was no easy task. Ms. Besetimoala acknowledged the support of her husband, parents, and in-laws throughout her journey, stating, “It wasn’t easy to manage my responsibilities, but I thank God for this achievement. This degree is dedicated to them.”
In her message to others, she encouraged anyone facing similar challenges to keep pursuing their dreams, regardless of age, marital status, or children. “If you have the will, you can achieve anything,” she affirmed. Ms. Besetimoala emphasized that true success is not merely about employment but about striving for educational and personal growth.
Her inspiring story reflects the power of resilience and determination, demonstrating that setbacks can be transformed into stepping stones for greater achievements.
