Sports play a vital role in uniting communities and fostering connections among individuals with common interests. For Yuji Horiguchi, a native of Japan, his experience on the rugby field in Fiji has been nothing less than a “journey of a lifetime.”
Horiguchi first arrived in Fiji as a tourist in 2019 but soon made the impactful decision to join the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as a volunteer. Currently, he is dedicated to coaching rugby at the Ba Provincial Freebird Institute in Lautoka.
Originally from Chiba, Japan, Horiguchi’s transition to coaching was prompted by an old injury that prevented him from playing. Having started his rugby journey at a young age, he briefly played rugby league in Japan as a flanker. His ambition to travel and work abroad ultimately led to his current volunteering role.
Horiguchi’s coaching philosophy is rooted in preventing the next generation from experiencing the same limitations due to injuries. With a firm belief in the power of sport, he emphasizes skill development, injury awareness, and instilling discipline both on and off the field. “I’m not only teaching them rugby skills but also how to enjoy the sport,” he stated.
Beyond the physical aspects of rugby, Horiguchi uses his role to convey essential life lessons. Remarkably, despite being miles from his homeland, he feels completely at home in Fiji, stating that this experience has become one of his most cherished memories.
Dedicated to understanding the local language and culture, Horiguchi is now focused on achieving his goal of becoming a certified coach. He aims to obtain a World Rugby Level Three license to enhance his coaching prowess and allow him to contribute even more significantly, whether in Fiji or elsewhere. His aspiration is to help the boys not only develop as players but also to be representatives of their country.
Almost a year into his journey, Horiguchi’s enthusiasm and commitment to coaching continue to grow. He embodies the phrase sega na mosi, sega na rawaka (no pain, no gain), recognizing that life’s journey includes both challenges and joys. “However, you must embrace everything with a strong will,” he advises, highlighting the importance of perseverance.
