Sports serve as a powerful connector, uniting individuals and communities through shared passions. For Yuji Horiguchi, originally from Chiba, Japan, his experiences on the rugby field have created meaningful connections during his time in Fiji, which he describes as a “journey of a lifetime.”
Horiguchi first traveled to Fiji in 2019 as a tourist, but his journey took a transformative turn when he decided to serve as a volunteer for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He now contributes to the Ba Provincial Freebird Institute in Lautoka as a dedicated rugby coach. His transition to coaching was prompted by a prior injury that prevented him from playing, yet it ignited a new passion for mentoring young athletes.
With years of rugby experience, Horiguchi aims not just to teach skills but also to inspire a love for the sport among the youth, emphasizing enjoyment and discipline both on and off the field. “I want to ensure the next generation continues to play rugby, despite challenges like injuries,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to the well-being and development of his players.
Beyond the technical aspects of coaching, Horiguchi takes every chance to impart valuable life lessons, creating a holistic approach to their growth. He has immersed himself in the local language and culture, reinforcing his sense of belonging and fulfillment in Fiji. “I have never felt more at home,” he expressed, indicating the deep connections he has formed within the community.
Horiguchi aspires to further his coaching credentials, aiming to obtain a World Rugby Level Three license. He dreams of continuing his journey as a coach, contributing positively to the lives of young athletes in Fiji or other nations.
Reflecting on his adventure, Horiguchi embraces the philosophy of “no pain, no gain” as he acknowledges the ups and downs of life.
