From IT Dreams to Cutting Hair: One Young Man’s Journey

Abdul Imraz, a 23-year-old from Visama, never envisioned himself as a barber. Growing up just outside Nausori town, he aspired to pursue a career in the Information Technology (IT) field. However, fate had other plans, leading him towards a job that aligned more closely with his creative abilities.

After finishing his primary education at Makoi Muslim Primary School and secondary education at Nasinu Muslim College, Imraz realized that continuing his studies in IT was not feasible. Like many of his peers, he faced challenges when selecting a career and decided to explore hairdressing.

He discovered a passion for creativity and artistic expression, and with his friendly demeanor, he secured a position at Super Fade Cut on Victoria Parade in Suva. “I love my work,” Imraz shared. He reflected on his childhood dream of entering the IT industry, admitting that circumstances prevented him from achieving that goal. Instead, he turned to barbering and salon services, quickly mastering the art of different hairstyles.

Starting his journey at a small barbershop in Nausori, Imraz used that opportunity to learn and refine his skills. He expressed gratitude for the support from his first employer, stating, “I didn’t know how to cut hair when I started. I had no knowledge at all. But today, I can cut any hairstyle my customers prefer.”

His move to a Suva barbershop was motivated by a desire for a modern and professional working environment that offered high-quality products and a conducive learning atmosphere. At Super Fade Cut, he found everything he wanted and has since thrived in his role. “In the past four years, I have learned a lot, and I don’t think I need to work anywhere else. I am fully committed to my current work and enjoy every moment on the job.”

Despite his dedication, Imraz values leisure time and engages in activities to relieve stress. He believes that hobbies enhance mood, resilience, skills, and personal identity. “Apart from barbering, my interests include playing soccer, exercising, and watching movies,” he shared.

Imraz emphasizes the importance of hard work, passion, and perseverance. He encourages young people to pursue education but also to explore their talents and passions if faced with setbacks. “My advice to young school leavers is to not lose hope! You can achieve remarkable things that you never thought possible, but you must be willing to learn and invest time in your work,” he advised.
