From Insurance Desk to Fabric Mastery: Fiji’s Kilikali Creation Sparks Local Craft Pride

Insurance officer Losana Tuitokova is making waves in the Fijian arts and crafts scene with her unique business, Kilikali Creation. By harnessing her natural artistic talent, Tuitokova has created a successful venture that showcases the beauty of Fijian-made products. The name of her business pays homage to her family’s agricultural roots, reflecting where her creative journey began.

Having a full-time job with LICI insurance, Ms. Tuitokova finds inspiration in her spare time, emphasizing that success doesn’t solely stem from traditional employment but also from following one’s passion. “The talent doesn’t depend on any school that you attend; it’s a God-given gift,” she shared, highlighting the intrinsic value of individual creativity in generating economic success.

Tuitokova specializes in a painting technique she refers to as blotching, where she applies paint directly onto fabric, including calico and rayon. This method allows her to create vibrant, one-of-a-kind designs that stand out in a market often saturated with mass-produced goods. She distinguishes her products from tie-dye, asserting that her designs are intricate and cannot be replicated.

Her creations include sarongs that retail at around $60 and shirts for $50. She recalls her early days in business, explaining that her first products were sold for just $10 each, but as her skills developed and her artistry became more recognized, she was able to increase her prices significantly.

Tuitokova sees her art as an opportunity to inspire others to explore their own talents. She perceives art as not just a business but a cherished legacy she hopes to pass on to her children. “This can be a part of my retirement plan… something that you can keep telling your children,” she expressed, highlighting the educational aspects of embracing one’s artistry.

Marketing strategies for Kilikali Creation began organically through social media, as she seeks exposure rather than immediate profit. She values the exchange of ideas with fellow artisans, stating that sharing information enhances everyone involved. Tuitokova dreams of establishing a boutique shop in Tavua that emphasizes locally-crafted products, pushing against the influx of imported goods.

Moreover, her message advocates pride in Fijian craftsmanship, urging locals to celebrate their heritage and talents. “We must have pride in our country and use our talents,” she remarked, asserting that maintaining cultural traditions does not only enrich the local economy but also fosters national identity.

In a landscape that continuously embraces innovation, individuals like Tuitokova are pivotal in promoting sustainability and creativity within their communities. Her story inspires hope for the future as she navigates her artistic journey, turning her passion into a thriving enterprise while also encouraging others to embrace their unique talents.
