From Injury to Glory: Daniel Shaw’s Remarkable Comeback at Commonwealth Weightlifting

Fiji’s weightlifter Daniel Shaw expressed his gratitude after securing a bronze medal in the junior 81kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship (CWC), marking a remarkable comeback from a four-month injury hiatus.

In an interview with SUNsports, Shaw conveyed his aspirations for a silver medal but remained content with his bronze achievement. “I’m pretty happy that I’ve won bronze despite pushing for silver in the last attempt; it’s God’s plan,” the 19-year-old stated. He is now looking forward to competing in the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

Shaw faced significant challenges as he returned to competition following an elbow injury. “I tore a ligament in my elbow back in Auckland during the Oceania Championship, which sidelined me for four months. Since then, I’ve been working hard to get back into shape,” he explained. By May, he was able to lift weights again, allowing him to train for the recent competition.

He acknowledged the need for continued dedication and focus on his training. “I’d like to thank Della Shaw-Elder, president of Weightlifting Fiji, and head coach Henry Elder for their trust in me to return to the platform after my injury,” Shaw said, also expressing gratitude to his supportive team for maintaining a positive mindset throughout their preparation.

Reflecting on the competition, Shaw mentioned his determination to strengthen his performance by observing his rivals at the CWC. “I just have to stay consistent, listen to my coaches, and everything will fall into place,” he added. He urged young athletes to heed their parents’ advice, emphasizing that a strong foundation begins at home.
