From Injury to Bronze: How Daniel Shaw Defied the Odds

Fiji weightlifter Daniel Shaw expressed his gratitude for winning a bronze medal in the 81kg junior category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship. This achievement is particularly significant for him, as he has recently recovered from a four-month injury.

In an interview, the 19-year-old Shaw mentioned that he had aimed for a silver medal but felt satisfied with his bronze finish, crediting it to a greater plan. He is now looking forward to his next competition at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

Shaw shared that competing after an elbow injury was challenging. He sustained a torn ligament in his elbow during the Oceania Championship in Auckland, which sidelined him for four months. However, he began training again around May and has been preparing for the CWC.

He acknowledged the importance of dedicating more time to his training and expressed his appreciation to the president of Weightlifting Fiji, Della Shaw-Elder, and head coach Henry Elder for their support in his return. He also thanked his teammates for their encouragement and positive outlook during his recovery.

Following his experience at the CWC, Shaw emphasized the need for consistency in training and listening to his coaches. He also encouraged young people to heed their parents’ advice, highlighting that foundational lessons begin at home.
