Joeli Varo offers invaluable wisdom to the younger generation, emphasizing that a degree is merely a piece of paper, while true education is reflected in one’s behavior. Mr. Varo’s journey from his modest beginnings in Narayawo Village, Namosi, to becoming a distinguished professional in land management serves as an inspiration.
Raised in Nakavu Village by a hardworking mother, a teacher, and a father, a truck driver, Mr. Varo learned important values such as discipline and perseverance. As the third of five siblings, he experienced both the challenges and benefits of growing up in a large family, where farming nurtured his interest in land management.
Mr. Varo’s educational path began at Nakavu Village School, continuing to Vashist Muni College before he transferred to Suva Grammar School to pursue his rugby goals. However, a pivotal moment occurred when a history teacher guided him toward a future in education rather than sports. He subsequently enrolled at the University of the South Pacific, where he intentionally overcame numerous challenges, including traveling long distances and selling cassava to afford bus fares, showcasing his resilience.
At USP, he pursued a double major in land management and geography, along with a minor in Geospatial Information Science. His dedication was rewarded when he earned a diploma and a bachelor’s degree in a short span, followed by an internship at the Ministry of Lands. An email from a professor about a scholarship opportunity in Trinidad led to further international exposure in land management.
Upon returning to Fiji, Mr. Varo held various positions, including lands officer at the Ministry of Lands and Resources and estates officer at the i-Taukei Land Trust Board. He also pursued a doctorate in algematics in Papua New Guinea before returning to Fiji to teach at Fiji National University. Now at USP as the head of discipline for land management and development, Mr. Varo is committed to shaping the next generation of leaders in this field.
His parting advice to youth underscores the importance of respect, suggesting that it holds the key to unlocking success. Mr. Varo’s journey demonstrates that success derives not just from achievements but also from how one treats others along the way.
