From Humble Beginnings: Ana Seru Shines as Top Cadet

Ana Seru, a Year Nine student, has distinguished herself as the top female cadet at the John Wesley College passing-out parade held at Albert Park in Suva. Growing up in the challenging environment of the Raiwaqa area, she has faced numerous social issues that shaped her determination.

The 14-year-old reflected on her recent week of cadet training, which tested her resilience in the humid weather while mastering the intricacies of marching. “I was aware that my upbringing was not perfect, but I aimed for excellence every time I entered the classroom,” Ana remarked.

Hailing from Naivucini, Naitasiri, Ana emphasized the importance of education as her pathway to a better life. “I realized that the only way to improve my life was through education,” she added.

Ana has also learned to navigate peer pressure, a lesson instilled in her by her family. “I focus on making sound decisions, as good choices lead to positive outcomes,” she stated.

At the parade, Ana dedicated her award to her siblings and her father, who was present at the event. “I’m the introvert in my family, and I hope this accomplishment encourages my younger siblings to believe that they can achieve their goals,” she expressed, noting that her younger siblings, inspired by her success, are eager to join secondary school and participate in cadet training in the future.
