Lote’s Homestay in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has experienced substantial growth, drawing in numerous guests during the festive season. The owner, Alipate Radrodro, a former hotel employee, shared that over 100 visitors stayed at the homestay during December of the previous year, including personnel from various governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Founded in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, the homestay welcomed its first patrons, staff from Save the Children Fiji, who were involved in post-cyclone assessments. Mr. Radrodro noted that these guests stayed for three months, marking the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey.
The 38-year-old entrepreneur, drawing on his experience as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva, converted his family home into a homestay that now boasts 17 guest rooms across three houses. He charges $100 per person per night, which includes both breakfast and dinner. Mr. Radrodro credited his family, especially his wife, for their unwavering support in building this venture.
The homestay has earned favorable reviews as the only accommodation in Nabouwalu, situated conveniently near the Nabouwalu Jetty. Mr. Radrodro pointed out that ferry passengers often choose to stay there during travel delays.
In a move to expand his business portfolio, he launched a vehicle rental service in 2023, now boasting a fleet of 13 vehicles, including a minibus that serves the Nabouwalu-Labasa corridor. “My homestay business helped me start the rental business,” he remarked.
Furthermore, to cater to increased demand, Mr. Radrodro is planning a significant expansion of the homestay, which will include a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant, with construction costs estimated at nearly $1 million. This expansion is expected to create 15 new jobs. He has also leased beachfront land from the Mataqali landowners to offer additional accommodation, providing guests with the choice of either a homestay experience or a boutique beachfront hotel.
With a proactive and optimistic mindset, Mr. Radrodro is committed to furthering his vision for growth and innovation in the Nabouwalu area.
This inspiring story highlights the resilience and entrepreneurship that can emerge in the aftermath of adversity. Mr. Radrodro’s journey serves as a reminder that with determination and support, new opportunities can arise even in challenging circumstances.
