From Homestay to Hospitality Empire: A Local Success Story

Lote’s Homestay, located in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has emerged as a successful business, drawing numerous visitors during the festive season. Owner Alipate Radrodro, who previously worked in the hotel industry, reported that over 100 guests stayed at the homestay during December of last year. Among these guests were employees from various Government agencies and NGOs.

The homestay was established following the destruction caused by Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, with its inaugural guests being staff from Save the Children Fiji, who stayed for three months to conduct post-cyclone assessments. Radrodro’s background as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva has been instrumental in navigating this venture towards financial independence. His family’s involvement, particularly his wife’s support, played a crucial role in this journey.

The transformed family home now accommodates 17 guests across three houses, with a pricing structure of $100 per person per night, which includes breakfast and dinner. The homestay’s prime location near the Nabouwalu Jetty makes it an attractive option for weary ferry passengers, further contributing to its popularity.

In 2023, Radrodro expanded his business by starting a vehicle rental service, managing a fleet of 13 vehicles, including a minibus that operates between Nabouwalu and Labasa. He credits the success of his homestay for helping him launch this new venture.

Looking ahead, Mr. Radrodro intends to expand the homestay significantly, with plans for a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant—an investment projected to cost nearly $1 million and create around 15 jobs. He has leased beachfront land to build additional rooms, diversifying offerings to include a homestay and a boutique hotel experience.

Radrodro approaches his future with enthusiasm and foresight, aiming to enhance the tourism experience in Nabouwalu through innovation and growth.

This story not only showcases the revitalization of a local business post-disaster but also exemplifies how resilience and creativity can lead to community development. Mr. Radrodro’s journey is a testament to how individuals can turn challenges into opportunities, fostering local tourism and creating jobs along the way.
