Lote’s Homestay, located in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has blossomed into a popular destination, attracting hundreds of visitors during the festive season. The owner, Alipate Radrodro, who has a background in the hotel industry, reported that over 100 guests utilized the homestay during the peak season in December last year. These visitors included staff from various government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The homestay was established following the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020. Mr. Radrodro shares that their first guests were from Save the Children Fiji, who stayed for three months to conduct post-cyclone assessments, highlighting the initial community-oriented aim of the business.

At 38 years old, Mr. Radrodro draws from his experience as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva to foster this entrepreneurial venture, viewing it as a path toward financial stability. The family transformed their home into a homestay that currently accommodates 17 guests across three houses, with room rates set at $100 per person per night, including meals.

The homestay has garnered positive feedback, particularly as the only accommodation provider in Nabouwalu, and it is conveniently situated near the Nabouwalu Jetty. Mr. Radrodro mentioned that ferry travelers often choose to stay at the homestay while waiting for transportation.

Expanding on his success, Mr. Radrodro launched a vehicle rental business in 2023, currently managing a fleet of 13 vehicles, including a minibus that serves the Nabouwalu-Labasa corridor. He credits the homestay business with providing the foundation to jumpstart this additional venture.

Looking ahead, Mr. Radrodro has ambitious plans for expansion. He aims to enhance the homestay by adding a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant, with construction costs projected at nearly $1 million. This expansion is expected to create 15 job opportunities for locals, demonstrating a commitment to the community.

Mr. Radrodro has also secured beachfront land from local landowners to allow for the creation of additional rooms, aiming to offer guests either a homestay experience or a boutique beachfront hotel option. His vision reflects a hopeful future filled with growth and innovation for Nabouwalu, bringing both tourism and economic opportunities to the area.

In summary, Lote’s Homestay not only symbolizes a personal success story for Mr. Radrodro but also represents a significant contribution to the local economy and community development. With continued growth and expansion plans, the future looks bright for both the business and the region.
