Fiji National University (FNU) media graduate Kata Wiseman Koli has reflected on the various challenges that defined his path to obtaining a Bachelor of Media and Communication. One of the most significant hurdles he faced was the experience of being away from home. Living in Nadi, Koli moved to Suva to stay with relatives, which came with its own set of adjustments. “We couldn’t do what we want to do on our own. We had to listen to them, and went according to what they wanted,” he explained. This shift, while offering some freedom, was markedly different from the comfort of his own home.
Despite these challenges, Koli found strength through his faith. “I was just praying to God and committing myself to God and trusting that he will guide me and protect me,” he shared. This spiritual support played a crucial role in helping him navigate through adversities.
Koli also emphasized the importance of practical training provided by FNU in equipping him for the media industry. He is currently employed as a photographer at The Fiji Times. As part of his studies, he completed a six-month attachment at Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), an experience he credits for significantly enhancing his professional growth.
Motivated by his parents, Koli expressed that their struggles were a source of inspiration throughout his educational journey. “Seeing my parents going through those challenges is what gave me the courage to complete my education and get a degree,” he remarked, reflecting on the pride he felt while receiving his diploma.
Furthermore, he encouraged other tertiary students to pursue their dreams and resist succumbing to peer pressure, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus on personal goals. Koli’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and familial support, inspiring many to aspire for success despite obstacles.
