Mataiasi Yaya Tagicakibau’s journey from a homeless teenager to a community advocate illustrates the power of resilience and the impact of second chances. For nearly a year during his teenage years, Tagicakibau faced immense challenges while living on the streets of Suva, Fiji, where he often slept outside and fought hunger. Despite his struggles, he has emerged and now dedicates himself to helping others facing similar predicaments.

At 41 years old, Tagicakibau recalls his difficult past, including washing his school uniform at a public pool and sleeping on cardboard. He experienced a significant breakdown in family relationships that led to his homelessness, spending nights nearby the Telecom Fiji office and the Suva Bus Stand. During this time, he kept his struggles a secret from teachers at Marist Brothers High School, which he attended while navigating life without stable shelter or food.

Reflecting on his journey, Tagicakibau has chosen to turn his painful experiences into a source of strength and advocacy. He has taken action to help others who find themselves on the streets, offering hope and sharing his story to motivate those in similar circumstances. He recounts waiting for meals outside local eateries, a place that serves as a reminder of his own past difficulties and the survival instincts he developed.

After securing employment at McDonald’s, he found a new sense of purpose and determination to prove himself to his family. Tagicakibau’s journey led him to participate in the Fiji Corrections Service’s Yellow Ribbon Project, where he worked as an Institutions Rehabilitation Officer for five years. His commitment is evident as he now delivers free cooking classes for children and runs a small business with his family.

Tagicakibau’s efforts align with broader initiatives in Fiji aimed at supporting vulnerable populations, similar to recent programs that have seen former street dwellers receive training and employment opportunities, helping them reclaim their lives. His work reflects a growing movement within the community to support those in distress, promoting hope and the possibility of a better future.

By sharing his story, Tagicakibau highlights the importance of community and the transformative power of compassion. His advocacy serves as an inspiration to many, showing that even from the depths of despair, one can rise, rebuild, and extend a hand to others seeking a way out of hardship.
