Mere Yabakivou, hailing from Nairukuruku Village, has transformed her enthusiasm for beekeeping into a flourishing enterprise known as Yabakivou Liquid Gold.

After gaining experience in public health and aviation security, she dedicated herself fully to bee farming during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yabakivou reflects on this turning point, stating, “During the COVID-19 pandemic, I came back home on leave and decided to take up bee farming full-time.”

Her journey began in 2012, where she faced initial hurdles such as equipment shortages but managed to innovate and secure assistance from the Agriculture office in Tavua. She appreciates the nature of beekeeping, noting, “With bees, we don’t have to worry about feeding them or providing water. I could check on them regularly to ensure their health.”

What began as a family enjoyment of honey has blossomed into a lucrative business, with her honey products gaining popularity. She now sells 500ml bottles for $13 and 1kg for $20.

In 2023, Yabakivou took a significant step by formally registering her business and branching out into producing beeswax products. Her commitment and ingenuity have been bolstered by the guidance of the Fiji Beekeepers Association and the Agriculture Ministry.

Her inspirational journey serves as a beacon for others, encouraging them to pursue their ambitions amidst challenges. “Don’t look back or let challenges discourage you; trust in God to help you achieve your goals,” she advises.

This story highlights the power of perseverance and adaptability in the face of adversity, showcasing how passion can lead to successful entrepreneurship.
