In Solove Sector, a compelling success story is emerging, showcasing the resilience and creativity of Fiji’s sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has made a significant impact on the lives of numerous cane farmers by providing essential tractor services to meet a crucial demand in the industry.
After leaving school after Form 4, Murti began his career as a cane harvester and later became the manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His journey took a transformative turn when he identified a substantial opportunity within the sugarcane sector, sparked by a new initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with the backing of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti took a decisive step to become a transport service provider. “I noticed a shortage of tractors in the sector, which hindered farmers from preparing their land,” Murti stated. He also recognized that many growers struggled to pay upfront costs. Thanks to FSC’s business plan and work order system, he was able to offer services without the need for immediate payments.
Starting with just a single tractor, Murti utilized his prior experience to help local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to providing dependable services quickly garnered attention from farmers across the region. Today, his business has significantly expanded, featuring a fleet of six tractors and various essential tools for sugarcane farming, such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers.
“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he remarked. “The work order system allowed me to operate like a legitimate business, benefiting both me and the farmers.”
In addition to his service business, Murti has returned to cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres of cane this year, with plans for further expansion.
