From Harvester to Innovator: How One Man is Revolutionizing Fiji’s Sugarcane Farming

In the Solove Sector of Fiji, a remarkable story is emerging, showcasing resilience and innovation within the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly impacted the lives of numerous cane farmers by establishing himself as a tractor service provider to fulfill a crucial need in the industry.

After leaving school at Form 4, Murti initially worked as a cane harvester and later became a manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His breakthrough came when he recognized a substantial opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector, prompted by a new initiative from Fiji Sugar Corporation.

In 2022, with support from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti made the daring decision to launch a transport service. He identified a shortage of tractors, which hindered farmers’ ability to prepare their land. “Many growers couldn’t afford to pay upfront, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I could offer services without requiring immediate cash payments. It was a win-win for everyone,” he explained.

Starting with just one tractor, Murti utilized his experience from Food Process to assist local farmers in land preparation. His commitment to providing reliable services quickly garnered attention throughout the sector. Today, his business has flourished, expanding to a fleet of six tractors and a variety of essential implements, including disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers—critical tools for sugarcane farming.

“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he stated. “The work order system allowed me to manage it like a proper business, and the farmers benefited as well.”

In addition to his service, Murti has returned to cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres this year with plans for further expansion.
